You do not need to worry about your work in the editor. It saves along all by itself, and at the top right you can always see where things stand. This works the same in the current editor and in the new one.
Saved automatically
Three seconds after your last change, the editor saves your draft on its own. So there is nothing you need to do while you write texts, swap pictures or try out colours.
If you keep typing while the editor is saving, nothing gets lost. It saves your new changes right afterwards, and it only shows „Gespeichert“ (saved) once everything really is saved.
Even when you leave the editor, for example with your browser's back button, it still saves whatever is open as you go.
Saving yourself
If you want to be on the safe side, click „Speichern“ (save) at the top right or press Cmd/Ctrl + S. The shortcut also works while you are typing in a text field. After a click on the button, the confirmation „Änderungen gespeichert“ (changes saved) appears briefly.
What the button tells you
„Speichern“ (save): there are changes that are not saved yet.
„Speichern...“ (saving): the editor is saving right now.
„Gespeichert 14:32“ (saved 14:32): everything is saved. The button is then disabled and shows you the time of the last save. Now you can leave the editor with peace of mind.
In the new editor (beta), the status appears as a short text next to the „Speichern“ button: „Nicht gespeichert“ (not saved), „Wird gespeichert …“ (saving …) or „Gespeichert 14:32“ (saved 14:32). If saving does not work for once, „Erneut versuchen“ (try again) appears there. You can read more about the new editor in the article „Try out the new editor“.
Good to know: Only your draft is ever saved. Your guests only see the changes once you click „Veröffentlichen“ (publish).
Frequently asked questions
It says „Speichern fehlgeschlagen“ (saving failed). What do I do?
Usually your internet connection just had a brief hiccup. The editor tries again by itself as soon as your connection is back, and also when you switch tabs and come back. At the latest with your next change it tries again anyway. You can also click „Speichern“ yourself once more. Do not close the tab until the button shows „Gespeichert ...“, otherwise your latest changes are gone.
I kept typing while the editor was saving. Is that included?
Yes. Whatever you change in the meantime, the editor saves right afterwards. Only when that is saved too does it show „Gespeichert“.
I want to close the tab and my browser warns me.
This warning only comes up when something is still unsaved. Go back and save. As soon as the button shows „Gespeichert ...“, you can close it safely.
Do I have to save separately before publishing?
No. When you click „Veröffentlichen“ (publish), the editor takes your open changes along.
My changes do not show on the live page, even though everything is saved.
Saving and publishing are two different things. Your draft is saved, but for your guests only the click on „Veröffentlichen“ counts.
We're planning together. What happens if we both work in the editor at the same time?
Then whatever was saved last counts. If the other person has just saved, a note appears at the top: „Gerade hat jemand anderes an deiner Seite gearbeitet. Lade neu, damit du nichts überschreibst.“ (someone else has just been working on your page. Reload so you don't overwrite anything.) Then click „Neu laden“ (reload) before you carry on. In the new editor (beta), the save status shows „An anderer Stelle geändert“ (changed elsewhere) in this spot. It's most relaxed if you briefly agree on who is working on the page right now.
