Try out the new editor

How to switch to the new editor and back, what is different there, and how to tell us what you think of it.

Written by Max Weber

We have rebuilt the editor so that finding your way around is even easier. Sections, design and settings sit together in one column on the left, your page appears large right next to it, and you add new sections directly in the preview, exactly where they belong. For the first time, you can also edit your page on your phone.

The new editor is still in beta. Your current editor stays the default, and you decide whether and when you try the new one. You can switch back at any time, and your page stays exactly as it is.

Switching to the new editor

  • On a computer: Open the editor as usual via Webseite → Bearbeiten (website, edit). At the top right of the header, right before the question mark, click „Neuer Editor“ (new editor) with the little „Beta“ label. If your browser window is narrower, you will only see a small magic wand there. Hover over it and „Neuen Editor ausprobieren“ (try the new editor) appears.

  • On your phone: When you open the editor on your phone, the card „Bearbeitung nur am Computer möglich“ (editing only possible on a computer) sits at the bottom. Tap „Neuen Editor ausprobieren (Beta)“ (try the new editor) on it, and you can get started right away.

  • Via „Was ist neu“ (what's new): In the dashboard under „Was ist neu“, a click on „Der neue Editor zum Ausprobieren“ (the new editor to try out) takes you straight in.

When you switch from the current editor, you are greeted with the message „Du bist jetzt im neuen Editor.“ (you are now in the new editor). On your first visit, a short guide in four steps shows you the most important moves. You can bring it back at any time: at the top under „Beta“ with „Was ist neu im Editor?“ (what's new in the editor?), or in the help menu behind the question mark with „Anleitung anzeigen“ (show guide).

Good to know: Before switching, the editor saves everything that is still open, and the page does not reload. So nothing gets lost. Your browser remembers your choice, so next time the new editor opens straight away. On another device or in another browser, you start in the current editor again.

Back to the current editor

  • On a computer: Click „Beta“ at the top left next to the name of your page and choose „Zum bisherigen Editor wechseln“ (switch to the current editor). Or open „Einstellungen“ (settings) at the top and, right at the bottom under Hilfe (help), click „Zum bisherigen Editor“ (to the current editor).

  • On your phone: Tap „Mehr“ (more) in the bar at the bottom and then „Zum bisherigen Editor“.

You will then see „Du bist wieder im bisherigen Editor.“ (you are back in the current editor). You can switch back and forth as often as you like.

The same page in both editors

Both editors work with the same draft of your page. Whatever you write in the new editor shows up in the current one exactly the same, and the other way round. Saving and publishing also work the same in both: your guests only see a change once you publish.

What is different in the new editor

The header

On the left you find the arrow back to your website, the name of your page and „Beta“. In the middle sit undo and redo, the three areas „Abschnitte“ (sections), „Design“ and „Einstellungen“ (settings), and the switch between „Computer“ and „Handy“ (phone) for the preview. On the right you can see whether everything is saved, plus „Speichern“ (save), „Vorschau“ (preview), the question mark with the help menu and „Veröffentlichen“ (publish). In a narrower window, some buttons only show their icon. Hover over them and their name appears.

With „Vorschau“ you open your draft in a tab of its own and see it the way your guests will see it after publishing. This works as soon as you have chosen an address.

The list of sections

Under „Abschnitte“ all sections of your page are listed one below the other. The hero is called „Titelbild“ (cover image) here. Use the handle on the left to drag a section to a new spot. The three-dot menu offers „Abschnitt darunter einfügen“ (insert a section below), „Duplizieren“ (duplicate), „Ausblenden“ (hide) or „Einblenden“ (show) and „Löschen“ (delete). The cover image carries a small lock: it always belongs to your page and cannot be deleted. With „Abschnitt hinzufügen“ (add section) at the very bottom, a new section is added at the end of your page.

Before a section disappears, the editor briefly asks. As long as you stay in the editor, undo brings a deleted section back.

The preview

Click a section in the preview and its settings open on the left. When you hover over a section, a small plus appears at its bottom edge. Use it to add a new section exactly at that spot. Hidden sections stay visible in the preview, just paler and with the note „Ausgeblendet“ (hidden). That way you can always find them again.

If your page does not quite fit into the window, the editor scales the preview down and shows above it by how much, for example „80 %“. If you have added more languages, you also switch the language of the preview there. If your envelope intro is switched on, you can play it with „Umschlag“ (envelope).

The settings of a section

When you select a section, „Gestaltung“ (design) sits right at the top. Depending on the section, you will find:

  • Layout: tiles with small sketches, for example „Zeitstrahl“ (timeline), „Programm“ (programme) or „Karten“ (cards) for the schedule. For the countdown and the quote they are called „Stil“ (style). The tile with the little „Standard“ label is the look your section has had until now.

  • Ausrichtung (alignment): „Mittig“ (centred) or „Linksbündig“ (left aligned). If only the heading moves, this row is called „Überschrift“ (heading).

  • Abstand oben und unten (spacing above and below): „Knapp“ (tight), „Standard“ or „Großzügig“ (generous).

Below that, under „Inhalt“ (content), your texts, pictures and details follow in collapsed groups. Even when closed, each group shows what is inside, for example „4 Fragen“ (4 questions) or „2 Orte“ (2 places). The last group holds the section's „Farben“ (colours): heading colour, text colour and background colour. „Alle Farben zurücksetzen“ (reset all colours) removes them again. At the top right, next to the name of the section, the eye hides or shows it and the bin deletes it.

For the cover image, under „Gestaltung“ you choose the height („Ganze Höhe“ for full height, „Drei Viertel“ for three quarters or „Halbe Höhe“ for half height), the position of your text on nine fields and the „Pfeil nach unten“ (arrow pointing down). Below come the groups heading, date and place, background, countdown, button and colours. They also show their settings when collapsed, many of them with a small preview picture.

New design options

The new editor brings new layouts for these sections:

  • Geschichte (your story): „Im Wechsel“ (alternating), „Einseitig“ (one side) or „Karten“ (cards)

  • Location: „Karten“ (cards) or „Bild daneben“ (picture beside)

  • Tagesablauf (schedule): „Zeitstrahl“ (timeline), „Programm“ (programme) or „Karten“ (cards)

  • Menü (menu): „Zentriert“ (centred) or „Menükarte“ (menu card)

  • FAQ: „Aufklappbar“ (expandable), „Alle offen“ (all open) or „Titel links“ (title on the left)

  • Übernachtung (accommodation): „Karten“ (cards) or „Liste“ (list)

  • Trauzeugen (witnesses): „Porträts“ (portraits) or „Rund“ (round), plus the columns „Automatisch“ (automatic) or „3 Spalten“ (3 columns)

  • Wunschliste (wish list): „Karten“ (cards) or „Liste“ (list)

Alignment and spacing are available for every section except the cover image. Gallery, free content, about me, countdown and quote already had their own layouts, and in the new editor you also find them at the top under „Gestaltung“.

You set the new layouts, the alignment and the spacing only in the new editor. But they apply everywhere: on your page for all your guests as soon as you publish, and also in the preview of the current editor. If you switch back, your design stays as it is. You can only change it in the new editor, though. As long as you do not change anything there, your page looks exactly as before.

Good to know: Some layouts only show their difference on a computer, and on a phone everything stacks one below the other. If your preview is showing the phone at that moment, the editor tells you right below the tiles. On a computer, „Computer-Ansicht zeigen“ (show computer view) switches over straight away.

Design

Under „Design“ you find „Vorlage“ (template), „Schriften“ (fonts), „Farben“ (colours) and „Form“ (shape) with corners and button size. Even when collapsed, each group shows your current choice, usually with a small preview picture. In the list of fonts, each font is shown in its own lettering, sorted into „Mit Serifen“ (serif), „Ohne Serifen“ (sans serif) and „Handschrift“ (handwriting). At the top right, „Zurücksetzen“ (reset) takes template, fonts and colours back to the first template in the list after a quick question. Corners, button size, font sizes and weights stay the way you set them, and so do the colours of individual sections. Undo brings everything back.

Settings

Under „Einstellungen“ you find everything around your page: its status with your address to copy and open (for a wedding this group is called „Eure Seite“, otherwise „Deine Seite“, both meaning your page), your „Sprachen“ (languages), the „Umschlag-Intro“ (envelope intro) with „Vorschau abspielen“ (play preview), and a quick way to „Anmeldung“ (RSVP), where you set the answer lock and the deadline. Right at the bottom under Hilfe (help) you find „Anleitung ansehen“ (view guide) and „Zum bisherigen Editor“ (to the current editor).

Saving

Saving happens by itself, just as you are used to. Next to „Speichern“ you can see the status: „Nicht gespeichert“ (not saved), „Wird gespeichert …“ (saving …) or „Gespeichert“ (saved) with the time. If saving does not work for once, „Erneut versuchen“ (try again) appears there. When you switch to another tab, the editor saves right away. When you leave it through a button or link, it saves first without asking you. Only if that fails does it ask whether you really want to go.

Publishing

A click on „Veröffentlichen“ opens a window that shows you beforehand what goes online, for example „2 Abschnitte geändert“ (2 sections changed) or „Design geändert“ (design changed). If something is still missing, such as your address or your plan, the right button is waiting there: „Adresse wählen“ (choose address) or „Laufzeit wählen“ (choose plan). When everything is ready, click „Jetzt veröffentlichen“ (publish now). If everything is online already, the button stays pale.

On your phone

On your phone you see your preview at the top and a bar at the bottom with „Abschnitte“ (sections), „Design“, „Einstellungen“ (settings) and „Mehr“ (more). Tap a section and its settings slide in from below, while the preview above shows every change straight away. The design of a section is a collapsed row there that already tells you what is set. Below the selected section you find „Abschnitt hier einfügen“ (insert a section here). On your phone, the three-dot menu also offers „Nach oben“ (move up) and „Nach unten“ (move down), so you can move sections without dragging. Undo, redo and „Veröffentlichen“ (publish) are at the top.

For the cover image, you only move the picture crop after tapping „Bildausschnitt verschieben“ (move picture crop). That way your photo does not slip by accident while you scroll. „Fertig“ (done) ends it.

Under „Mehr“ you find the preview in a new tab, the guide, the support chat, „Lieber am Computer weitermachen?“ (rather continue on a computer?) with the link by email, the way back to the current editor, as well as cookie settings, privacy policy and legal notice.

On a tablet in landscape you usually get the computer view, in portrait the phone view.

It is a beta: tell us what you think

The new editor is still very fresh. Maybe something feels unfamiliar, or something gets stuck somewhere. Then please tell us, every piece of feedback helps us make it better for you. The quickest way is the support chat: on a computer, click the question mark at the top right and choose „Support-Chat“. On your phone, tap „Mehr“ (more) at the bottom and then „Support-Chat“. Or write to us at [email protected].

Should something go wrong in the new editor after all, you will see „Im neuen Editor ist etwas schiefgelaufen“ (something went wrong in the new editor). Your changes are still there, and with „Im bisherigen Editor weitermachen“ (continue in the current editor) you carry on without a detour.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to switch to the new editor?
No. The current editor stays your default, and you can keep working with it in peace. Try the new one whenever you feel like it.

Will anything get lost when I switch?
No. Both editors work with the same draft, and before every switch whatever is still open gets saved.

Why does the current editor open again on my laptop?
Your choice is remembered by the browser in which you switched. On another device or in another browser, simply switch once more.

I cannot find my new design in the current editor.
Layouts, alignment and spacing can only be set in the new editor. On your page and in the preview of the current editor, they stay in place all the same.

At the top it says „An anderer Stelle geändert“ (changed elsewhere). What does that mean?
Your page was just edited somewhere else, perhaps in another tab or on another device. Click the note and then „Neu laden“ (reload) to see the latest version. If you keep editing here instead, the editor saves your version and the other change is lost. On a phone it says „Anderswo geändert“ (changed elsewhere), so simply reload the page.
