Trying things out is part of it, and not every idea still looks good at second glance. That is what the two arrows in the header are for. They work the same in the current editor and in the new one.
Undo and redo
The arrow pointing left takes back your last change (Cmd/Ctrl + Z).
The arrow pointing right brings it back (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z, on Windows also Ctrl + Y).
If the arrows are greyed out, there is nothing to take back or bring back right now.
The editor remembers up to 50 steps. Whatever you type into the same field in one go counts as a single step: undo does not take back every letter on its own, but everything you wrote without a pause. In the same way, it is one step when you search for the right shade in the colour picker or move the picture crop.
What is recorded: changes to content, adding, deleting and duplicating sections, their order, hiding and showing them, and your settings under „Stil & Schriften“ (style and fonts), which is „Design“ in the new editor. What is not recorded are pure matters of view: switching between Desktop and Mobile, selecting a section, the language preview and playing the envelope animation. That is why undo leaves your view as it is and only brings back the state of your page. The editor then saves that state automatically, like any other change.
The envelope intro itself is not part of the history either. It is chosen under Dashboard → Webseite → „Umschlag-Intro“ tab and saved there instantly, so if needed you simply set it back.
Good to know: The history only applies to the current session. If you reload the editor or come back the next day, it is empty. A deleted section can then no longer be brought back.
The four keyboard shortcuts
Cmd/Ctrl + S: save, even while you are typing in a text field
Cmd/Ctrl + Z: undo
Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z: redo, on Windows also Ctrl + Y
Escape: clear the selection and go back to the list of sections
While you are typing in a text field, undo and redo belong to that field: Cmd/Ctrl + Z takes back your last input there, just as you know it from other programs. For a whole step in the editor, click next to the field or use the arrows at the top. Escape does nothing either while you are typing in a text field. If a window or a menu is open, Escape only closes that.
On purpose, there is no shortcut for deleting. Sections only disappear via the three-dot menu or the bin icon, and always only after a question.
Frequently asked questions
Cmd/Ctrl + Z behaves differently in a text field.
That is intended. When your cursor is in a field, the shortcut takes back your last input in exactly that field. If you want to go back a whole step in the editor, click next to the field or on the arrow pointing left in the header.
Escape does nothing while I am typing.
Right, in a text field Escape does not clear the selection. That way you do not accidentally close the section you are working on. Click next to the field and then press Escape, or use the arrow at the top next to the name of the section.
I undid something and then kept working. Redo no longer works.
That is right. As soon as you change something new after an undo step, the way forward ends. The new state is then the one that counts.
After publishing, the arrows are greyed out.
That is intended. Publishing starts the history afresh, so that you do not accidentally bring back a state from before you published.
Can I take back a change from yesterday?
Unfortunately not. The history starts anew every time you open the editor. Whatever you want to take back is best taken back in the same session.
