Your page is something personal, and not every detail needs to be visible to the whole world. With password protection, visitors first land on a friendly lock screen and only see your invitation once they know the password.
Setting up a password
In the dashboard, click „Webseite" (website) on the left and scroll down to the card „Passwortschutz" (password protection).
Flip the switch at the top right of the card.
Type the password you would like into the field „Passwort", ideally something your guests can remember easily.
Click „Passwort speichern" (save password).
The protection takes effect immediately, you do not have to publish your page again for it. After that you pass the password on to your guests, ideally right in the invitation or in the message with the link. Without the password nobody gets onto the page.
You can leave the passing on to us as well. While the protection is active, you will find the option „Seiten-Passwort in der Mail zeigen" (show the page password in the email) under Einladungen → Per E-Mail versenden → E-Mail-Vorlage → Anpassen (Invitations → send by email → email template → customise). Switch it on and the password sits at the bottom of every invitation, so your guests do not have to ask for it first. Without active password protection the option does not exist at all, and if you take the protection away later, the email leaves the block out by itself.
Password protection used to live under Einstellungen → Allgemein (Settings → General). All you will find there now is a little signpost, so you do not search in vain.
What your guests see
When they open the page, an overlay appears with the title „Geschützter Bereich" (protected area) and the sentence „Bitte gib das Passwort ein, um diese Seite aufzurufen." (please enter the password to open this page). Your guests type their password into the field „Passwort eingeben" and click „Seite anzeigen" (show page). If something is not right, „Falsches Passwort. Bitte versuche es erneut." (wrong password, please try again) appears.
Once the password is correct, the page stays open for the current browser session. If someone closes the browser completely and comes back later, they are asked once more. If your page also runs in English, the DE|EN language switch is visible on the lock screen already.
By the way: with the protection switched on, the live preview at the top of Dashboard → Webseite asks for the password first as well. So you see exactly what your guests experience.
Changing the password or switching the protection off
Changing: Type the new password into the field and click „Passwort speichern" again. From then on only the new one works.
Switching off: Flip the switch. The saved password is deleted and your page is freely reachable again. This takes effect immediately too.
Good to know: There is one shared password for all your guests, not personal logins. Whoever passes it on also passes on the access. For most celebrations that is plenty, but it is not meant for strictly confidential content.
Frequently asked questions
Does the password protection cost extra?
No, you can set it up whenever you like. It only takes effect once your page is published, of course.
I have forgotten my own password.
No problem, it is there in plain text in the field under Dashboard → Webseite. That is exactly the idea, so you can read it out and pass it on at any time.
Can the password go straight into the invitation email?
Yes. In the email template under Einladungen (invitations), switch on the option „Seiten-Passwort in der Mail zeigen" (show the page password in the email), and every guest gets it at the bottom of their invitation.
Can I lock individual guests out again?
Not one by one. But you can set a new password at any time and send it only to the people who still need it.
Do my guests have to enter the password every time they visit?
Only once per browser session. Anyone who leaves the page open in between or opens it again right away gets in without typing it once more.
